Intel, founded in 1968, is an old-timer among technology companies, and the semiconductor manufacturer’s longevity has paid off handsomely for shareholders. Its early start positioned the company to run away with the market for the chips that serve as a computer’s brain. Intel had close to 100% market share in central processing units for personal computers at one point. Softening the blow, Intel remains the biggest player in making CPUs for back-end servers, which are very much in demand in order to power the rapid shift to cloud-based computing. What’s troubling is that Intel missed opportunities to make chips for mobile devices, which is where much of future growth lies. With 30 consecutive years of annual growth in its cash payouts to shareholders, Chevron’s track record instills confidence that the dividend will continue to rise well into the future. Chevron’s origins as a company date back to the 19th century and run through John D. Rockefeller’s legendary oil empire. This is in large part due to the extra tax-loss harvesting opportunities available with the larger set of individual securities. Unlike index funds, Aperio and Parametric prioritize both harvesting tax-losses as well as closely tracking the index. These firms have demonstrated you can generate significant outperformance in the form of tax-savings, if you are willing to incur modest tracking differences from the designated index.

In US equities, most quotes and trades are through three large exchange families—Intercontinental Exchange Inc.’s NYSE, Nasdaq Inc., and Cboe Global Markets Inc.—and their 11 exchanges. Each exchange offers direct feeds for the order book and top of book quotes, with most offering an aggregated, price-book feed as well. Alternatively, Level 2 is sometimes used on trading displays to differentiate the best bid and offer at each exchange from the national best bid and offer . Each of these views are commonly considered Level 1 data or top of book, as they lack the distinction of price levels for bids and asks. While the BBO of all 13 exchanges may emulate a price book, the BBO listed second may not be the second-best bid or offer in the price book. Conversely, the order book (also called “market-by-order” or MBO) provides a more granular view of Level 2 data, listing all quotes at each price level. This depth of book for a security is valuable for garnering the true demand and more accurately forecasting the behavior of price movement.

Shares in the new GM are up just 34% since the 2010 initial public offering. From humble beginnings as a single discount store, Wal-Mart now operates more than 11,600 retail locations around the globe and employs 2.3 million workers.

The graph below displays the Stock-level Tax-Loss Harvesting tracking differences from its VTI benchmark by year based on the same assumptions. In some years they were positive (i.e. the portfolio outperformed the benchmark) and in some years negative (i.e. the portfolio underperformed the benchmark). In this limited time sample the average difference was very slightly positive, but over the long term you should expect an average difference of zero. We use the term tracking difference to describe the difference between the portfolio’s return and the original ETF’s return in a given time period and tracking error for the standard deviation of the tracking differences. We call the up to 100 individual stocks owned as part of our Stock-level Tax-Loss Harvesting service the Wealthfront 100. To expand this position to hundreds of stocks requires a much larger account as you are forced to include allocations to smaller Mid Cap stocks in the position.

Don’t be surprised if this long-time wealth creator bounces back sooner rather than later. The original Hewlett-Packard, started in 1939, was the granddaddy of Silicon Valley technology firms. The company’s fortunes really took off as home PCs and printers gained in popularity. Two years later the company spun off Agilent Technologies to house products that didn’t relate to computers, such as scientific instruments and semiconductors. The beginning of the end for the original Hewlett-Packard started with the ill-fated 2001 acquisition of Compaq to form the world’s largest maker of PCs. Attempts to restart growth with smartphones and tablets were unsuccessful, losses mounted, and management was forced to lay off tens of thousands of employees.
